Case Study: Accessibility Guides

Case Study 5

Accessibility Guides
(The Open University)

The Open University creates Accessibility Guides for all its modules and shares them proactively with students upon registration (or in advance of registration upon student request). Accessibility guides cover the following areas:

• Accessibility and inclusion in the overall module
• Alternative formats available
• Figure descriptions
• Media, captions and transcripts
• Technology and third-party resources
• Tuition
• Potentially distressing content
• Examinations and assessments.

The accessibility guides were co-designed with students;
representatives from the OU Disabled Students Group were involved in the guide design and decisions making process around what would be included in the guides. Students with disabilities have fed back that these guides have provided peace of mind when signing up for courses and have enabled them to ensure their support and strategies for study are in place in time for them to study effectively.
