Principle Five: Constructive discussions and interactions

Principle Five:

Constructive discussions and interactions

Promoting constructive discussions and interactions that are respectful and where possible reflective of a range of equality groups within the curriculum and about the curriculum. These may be between staff and students, external contributors, and students, and amongst students.

Principle Five relates to the interactions that occur in and beyond classrooms, including in related processes such as evaluation, partnership, and student voice.

It might refer to the way a teacher interacts with students as part of a formal teaching activity, such as giving a lecture or leading a seminar, either in person or in digital spaces and online platforms.

It includes providing opportunities for discussion in spaces beyond the classroom, and partnership with other parties such as academic tutors, careers teams, public sector colleagues or private partners offering student support.

Crucially, it refers to giving students voice in leadership spaces, including committee representation and other, less formal opportunities.

Principle Five encourages practitioners to:

  • Create opportunities for discussion
  • Create an inclusive classroom dynamic
  • Collaborate with partners
  • Encourage dialogue with senior leaders
