Principle Four: Inclusive teaching and assessment

Principle Four:

Inclusive teaching and assessment

Providing an inclusive and accessible range of modes and methods of teaching and assessment to ensure that students can learn and demonstrate the learning outcomes successfully and
authentically

Principle Four relates to the ‘how’ of teaching, learning, and assessment.
No matter how accessible the curriculum, it can never be delivered in isolation, but must always be accompanied with pedagogical approaches, student engagement, and assessment.

Inclusive teaching and assessment approaches are vital for delivering an inclusive curriculum, so that barriers can be addressed, and students are able to feel confident in their learning.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) provides a comprehensive model that practitioners can draw on to design inclusive teaching and assessment environments.

Principle Four encourages practitioners to:

  • Ensure they have inclusive learning outcomes
  • Design an inclusive pedagogy
  • Reflect the ethos of relational pedagogies within curriculum design decisions and learning experiences
  • Inclusive assessment

The Principle Four considerations are shown in the table below and are discussed and exemplified in the following sections.
